Blues secured a rare away win as we beat Cambridge United on the road to progress to the next round of the FA Cup. It was a game with several positives but the last 10 minutes plus stoppage time was enough to get the nerves right on edge.
We had a fair bit of sideways and backwards near the start of the game but we know from last season that we can against this opposition. It worked well and we were able to tire down Cambridge, we controlled the game well and it was the football Davies is looking for. I think it does highlight that it’s a tactic not quite suited to the Championship, there needs to be more pace and attacking prowess but I digress.
Kyogo, whom I have been critical of, managed to bag his second goal in a Blues shirt. I really hope it gives him the confidence to achieve better things in the League as he has expressed a desire to prove himself at Blues. That is something I commend massively and while my criticism is that he can’t do it at this level that’s also just a bit of banter to slag off the SPL, (although is pointing out that the SPL is about League One standard and then one of their best strikers banging a decent goal against League Two opposition really banter or my point proven?) I want Kyogo to do well and the way he moves shows that he has a solid footballing IQ!
I stand by my comment the other day that Wagner is looking the best signing of this season already. I mean we have Gray who also is a great signing but I guess I mean more of an unknown signing. He has come in and hit the ground running despite not playing much football in recent months and is already looking like a key component to push things forward!
Ducksch banged in his third in two games. I didn’t like to see him getting stick a few weeks ago but somehow it seems to have spurred him on as he’s gone on to prove the doubters wrong. If we can get more of that in the coming weeks I think it’ll be huge so whatever he’s dug up to start hitting the net more frequently I hope he keeps hold of it.
I couldn’t write a blog post without a bit of negativity given how much of a moaner I am but everything looked calm until the last 10 or 15 minutes of the game as I said at the start. Why break the habit of a lifetime and make things easy eh Blues? But I’m still trying to decide if it was proof our bench is very weak or if the players thought the game was done and dusted. I suspect the reason lies somewhere in the middle but it could have been a right calamity if we’d conceded three goals in the last ten minutes and would surely have heaped pressure on the team and Davies.
Thankfully we made it through and we’re in the hat for the Fourth Round draw which takes place today at 18:35. Blues will be number 27 and no doubt hoping for a home fixture!
