New Year, Same Problems

As it’s a new year I thought I’d take a look back at the season so far, I think it’s fair to say it’s not quite gone as expected. In fact it’s only getting worse as well, creating flashbacks of the last few Championship Seasons that saw us circle the bottom and eventually get relegated.

Blues now sit 7 points from the relegation zone, 9 points from the play offs and 21 points adrift of top spot. The charge to the Premier League will need a better push in 2026, the momentum from last seasons record breaking season hasn’t followed us through to the Championship but the problems seem to have joined us and been amplified specifically our lack of killer instinct. Something therefore surely needs to change.

At the start of the season there was a lot of buzz and expectations were high and rightly so. I don’t think anyone genuinely thought we’d run away with the league but many fans thought we’d be sticking around the top 6 throughout the season. I suppose it’s not like we’re miles away but it is certainly getting further away as only Sheffield Wednesday are having a worse run of results and the difference is we have one more draw in the last five, if that carries on we will find ourselves pulled into yet another Championship relegation battle and that’s nowhere near where we should be.

The [Insert Name Here] Out Brigade are vocal again, my brother has sent me several messages over this Christmas calling for Davies head and I can see why but I struggle to get onboard with this usually. I appreciate things aren’t going as expected and perhaps the pressure is even getting to Davies as he received another red card for his reaction to the referee getting in the way of Iwata.

I think there is still two ways to look at things, a solid project that builds on a foundation whereby the manager and the player develop in the league together with the Promotion aim being next season with consolidation this season or do we want immediate success? To be fair to the Davies Out gang I think many of these don’t actually expect immediate success but are just concerned with what we’re seeing.

So, is it Davies or is it a combination of injuries and bad luck? Will investment this month create progress or will it be squandered cash? The thrashing at the hands of Watford on New Years Day piles a bit of pressure on and defeat tomorrow would be a bitter pill to swallow for sure. It’s hard because success was unlikely to be instant but it was clearly what the owners wanted. It’s like they’re balancing their lesson from the Eustace-Rooney saga but giving time to Davies who has potentially plateaued might not be the right move, but then can he turn it around with a bit of investment?

For me swapping Alfie May in favour of Kyogo has clearly backfired. I get its a top flight league but if we’re being honest Scottish Premier League is just mid League One standard with Celtic and Rangers the teams bouncing between League One and Championship every season. In comparison to English Football anyway. I would steer clear of any player from this league if we’re hoping to move forward.

I hope Davies recruits right in this window as if we go down again its a huge issue, not just for the fans but the owners too. I think he’ll get this window and two or three games after, if it doesn’t turn around then he’ll go and they’ll bring someone in to keep the club up. It almost looks as though the writing is on the wall for this to happen! I hope there is better recruitment than an MLS player as if Scottish Football is League One MLS is probably on par if not worse!
