Decent Business But A Quiet End

A quiet deadline day for Blues as we brought in just two players, both on loan, without making any multi-million pound signings. I did speak during the window about how Blues seem to get their main business done early now, although last season we did bring in 3 deadline day signings, and I think this is reflective of being efficient with your business. It’s exciting to have that deadline day signing that you spend over the odds for but surely most people can see that getting the business done early allows for better preparation for the season ahead.

Blues managed to bring in a left back in Jack Robinson which was hugely important given the Cochrane injury. Laird had done well as cover but it’s of course a switch of sides for him and so there was definitely a requirement for a LB to be brought in. I do think we could do with another striker as I’m not quite convinced with Kyogo being able to handle the physicality of the Championship.

Overall though I don’t think there’s any possible complaints from the business Blues conducted over the summer and I still think we will see one or two additional players join that are out of contract. Blues are currently favourites to sign Dele Alli according to the bookmakers, it would be an interesting one but we were also linked with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain which didn’t amount to anything (Although again, there is still time).

Of the signings we have made this summer, I think Dimmy has been the stand-out so far. He has fit in and looks exactly the player Blues need for the football Davies wants. I think Blues have also utilised the loan market well, we’ve loaned young players and while I queried in the past about developing young players for other clubs and “What’s in it for us?” but many of them have obligations to buy if we go up. This does of course have it’s own pitfalls but if we can get a young talent in, see what he’s saying and then secure them on a permanent at the end if they show promise, this can only be a good thing.

I singled out Kyogo as perhaps not being what we expected but that is the rash judgement of an emotional fan (Well, partly anyway) as he does get himself about, he does get into good positions but he currently looks a bit lightweight and his finishing is a tad rusty (To say the least). I am hopeful that this will be a problem of the early days and within the magic ten game number (As per Davies, he stated that last season it took us about 10 games to get properly into gear) I’m hopeful he will find his feet.

As I say, the window may be shut but I suspect we will see a couple of new additions throughout the season still. Now with the international break those not on international duty can have a rest and we’ll push on after the break!
