Where Will Blues Strengthen?

There’s about a week and a half until the end of the Transfer Window and Blues have previously confirmed they remain active in the window as they look to bring in another two or three players.

Blues business in the window so far has been fantastic, I don’t think any of us can complain about what’s been brought in and when you compare it to our squad the last few seasons we were in the Championship I think we’re now the strongest we’ve been in years. This will be huge for the season ahead, I do think we’ve pretty much got our starting line up sorted so any additions will likely be for a strong cover option in the positions.

As Cochrane is injured Blues will no doubt look to speed up their recruitment of a left back cover but the other day Davies mentioned he was also hoping to bring players in in the midfield or that can play on the wing and a striker. Blues have already been linked to a winger, Liverpool’s Lewis Koumas, and are currently linked with former Arsenal and Liverpool player Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. I think the second would be a crazy addition to the bench!

With the depth that Davies is hoping to bring in in mind it’s fair to say that Blues will need to get a move on. We know there will be plenty of discussions and targets in the background but we also know there’s plenty of clubs out there that think Blues will just throw an endless amount of money at any issues we have. This isn’t necessarily the case, Blues have spent very little in this transfer window to be fair, but as it gets closer to the end of the window there will no doubt be an inflation of price for players along the way, we’ve seen in contrast that if there is a target Blues are desperate to get money can be made available as with Stanno last season.

The other thing to consider is future FFP compliance, it’s a gamble to throw money at the team because the Championship is a difficult division and while I’m confident in my heart we will go up it would be naïve to not prepare for the financial implications if we don’t achieve this (We will though). These owners are anything but naïve with money so it will certainly be priced into their thinking but I’d go one further and suggest Wagner & co wouldn’t want to spend all the promotion prize money in getting there because they’ll want to build a team (If and when we get promoted) that can as a minimum remain in the division.

The next twelve days will no doubt be interesting – we’ve seen with the Akpom saga that sometimes the vision isn’t enough but with the raft of players we’ve brought in, not just this season but last season as well, it’s enough for me to remain calm, keep the belief and trust that whatever we need will be mostly brought in.
