Double Defeat!

Well that didn’t quite go quite to plan did it? It wasn’t even just one game, but both games Blues suffered defeat in at the weekend. It’s certainly means we can’t look across the express way and laugh at the DVB’s too much, but it’s also just a friendly so it’s not the end of the world.

I must admit I didn’t anticipate a 4-0 defeat in either fixtures, nor did I anticipate losing both of them, but such is football, especially pre-season. I used to firmly believe, in that superstitious way all football fans have their little nuances, that to have a successful season Blues need a bad pre-season. I can confirm the facts do not back up this superstition but it offers me a bit of comfort that we lost our opening pre-season game last season and set the points record.

For me though, at least one defeat is essential in pre-season. It’s certainly when I’d rather then suffer a surprise defeat over the league. I want the players to experience as much as they can in pre-season as it’s what it’s there for surely? I want the players to learn from defeat and ensure they’re few and far between next season in the Championship.

It also gives Davies a chance to see what works and what doesn’t although the bigger shock came in the second squad which suffered a 4-0 defeat. I suppose looking at the line up two of the players in it have been linked with moves away that are practically confirmed and at least two more have been basically told they can leave but does it raise a question about our squad depth?

There’s still a couple of weeks ahead of the first game of the season, there’s also a few pre-season fixtures to go as well so I’m sure Davies will take the positives that he saw but also will have identified areas of improvement. I’m still quietly confident Blues will be fine, I also think we’ll have a signing or two between now and the transfer window closing so these two defeats will hopefully become another footnote at the end of another fantastic season!

Blues are back in action tomorrow night as they compete in their rearranged fixture and I’m sure with it now being a home fixture Blues will be looking to give the home fans something to celebrate.
