Sampsted Missing From Portugal

Blues are nearing the end of their week in Portugal and as expected there were a few omissions from the squad that travelled over, one player though that has raised a few eyebrows through his absentness is Sampsted.

Blues had Sampsted on loan last season, something they converted to a permanent deal at the end of his loan spell, but despite Blues having paid to bring him over it seems that he’s not part of Davies plans. It could be something as minor as an injury though, which Sampsted is prone to of course.

It does seem a weird one though, does it suggest that Blues will be loaning him out? If so why did they convert the loan deal, was it a case of arranging cover or was it just to get additional players on the books ahead of the summer? I suspect there’s another way to look at it, has our recruitment strategy been far too successful?

Sampsted was realistically cover for Laird, although he didn’t come in much when Laird was injured, but with Osayi-Samuel brought in it forces Sampsted down the pecking order. Would Blues move him on given we just signed him? I don’t think so but then it is an odd one on the face of it, ultimately I could be reading too much into it and there are a million reasons he may not have linked up with the squad at this time.

There are the players left out that you’d expect, Sanderson looks set to leave, Longelo has left to join Motherwell for an undisclosed fee, Tyler Roberts is expected to leave and Hasson who joined last season has found himself surplus to requirements. I do also suspect we will see Bielik depart this summer too, he’s certainly not a player that will want to spend another season on the bench but the quality being brought in it’s hard to see him being more than a squad player.
