150 Years Keeping Right On!

Blues unveiled their Home and Keepers Kit Tuesday in a reveal that was fantastically done, with the help of Steve Knight, reflecting 150 years of Blues from Small Heath Alliance through to Birmingham City. It was followed by the announcement of a few different things that will be going on this year to mark the occasion. Oh and then there was the announcement of James Beadle!

So to start with, the kit itself. I’ve seen very little to suggest people are fuming with the kit but at the same time I’ve not really seen a raft of fans eager to get their hands on it. It’s just a plain Blue top with the gold badge, Nike tick and Undefeated logo, it’s not like there’s any subtle details or anything really stand out but that’s no issue at the end of the day. I do think the third kit or even just the “Retail Capsule Collection” will contain a top that is more stand out.

Yesterday the celebrations of 150 years campaign was announced, the Keep Right On campaign comes with its own commemorative badge and a few events. Initially to kick things off is the home kit reveal, next comes quite an unusual one; a BCFC Antiques Roadshow. On 20th July fans will be given the opportunity to bring some of their Blues memorabilia ahead of the away kit being revealed. There’s not a great deal of information on this yet, is it just turn up with your stuff, is it at St Andrews or is there another venue and so forth.

In August we have the second Trevor Francis Memorial match which will coincide with the unveiling of a statue in honour of one of our most iconic players. The fixture itself has already been announced, it will take place at St Andrews and will be against another of Francis’ former clubs, Nottingham Forest.

There will also be an anniversary game played in November. Blues first ever fixture took place in November 1875 when they faced Holte Wanderers in a 1-1 draw, it makes you wonder who the fixture will be against or if it will be a kind of legends vs current players. Either way it’s one to keep the diary free for as I imagine there will be a lot on for this one.

December will see the release of the Retail Capsule Collection which sounds to me like a load of merch to mark the occasion. It will no doubt be on the Christmas list of Bluenoses both young and old. It then goes on to say there will be more events announced in 2026, I half suspect there will be one or two additional events during 2025 too.

I think these owners know how to make an occasion so I am looking forward to see what they do for the season. Before I finish I did want to highlight a line in the announcement that I think is really prominent;

For many of us, we became a Bluenose because it was passed down from generation to generation. This is a family club, always was, always will be. So during this year when we glance back, as we undoubtedly will, I’m sure many Blues fans who came before us will be brought to mind and we will recall shared memories, plus all the joys and sorrows. I know we will thank them for making us a Bluenose and for enriching our journey.

I love that, my own journey consists of a grandfather who was a mad Blues fan, a father who is still going down every season, myself who has supported Blues all my life and then my son as well. That’s four generations of Bluenoses, it potentially means that for as long as St Andrews has been about there has been a member of my family stood on the terraces and long may it continue!
