Stansfield Withdraws From U21’s

The international break is upon us and while League One tends to continue Blues had their game against Stevenage on Saturday postponed due to calls ups for Willumsson, Hanley, Harris, Paik and Stansfield.

Stansfield was the only player outside the top two divisions called up to Lee Carsley’s U21’s but has now pulled out due to “knocks” and has returned to Blues. It’s not particularly ideal as Stansfield has not long returned from injury so is it a case of the 22 year old returned too quickly or just a precaution?

Blues have developed a bit of a reliance on Stansfield, which is fair enough he’s a fantastic striker, he seems to get stuck in everywhere and embodies the sort of personality that we Bluenoses love. This includes a desire to be ever present, to not miss matches and once he was injured he no doubt was eager to get right back to it. It’s something that you have to admire but it’s a trait that should be coupled with the understanding that sometimes you need to sit out a bit longer than anyone wants.

There isn’t a great deal of information as to what has happened but I’m going to speculate anyway as such a limited amount of information suggests it’s probably more precautionary. It’s a huge honour to get the call up but it’s not a competitive fixture, England take on France tomorrow, and with that in mind he has probably decided that with the league on the go and a cup final on the horizon friendlies against France and Portugal can probably be given a miss.

I’m not suggesting there’s nothing wrong, it wouldn’t surprise me if there was a little niggle and personally I’d certainly rather him be fit for Blues!
