Blues extended their run to 18 games with victory over Wycombe yesterday and it does feel as though the race for the title is all but over. It would take a monumental f*** up for Blues to throw away their grip on the title, especially sat 12 points clear (Not 11 as some of my questionable maths may have suggested yesterday) with a game in hand.

In the first half Blues again could have been three goals to the good but just seemed unable to find the back of the net. A great save to deny Alfie May a chance to get in the scoresheet was followed by an offside call once Dowell had found the back of the net. I spoke in the week of how it’s mad to complain after a win (Whilst bemoaning the lack of goals), I’ll chalk that off as simply an observation and won’t mention it again. I just want to be really spoiled and see us absolutely hammer a team in the League.
The goal did come after 21 minutes as Taylor Gardner-Hickman secured his second goal of the season, an absolute banger of a goal at that, as Ryan Allsop picked him out with a long distance ball that Taylor brought down and struck beautifully. Will Norris, the Wycombe keeper, got a hand to the bullet but was unable to do more than slow it down as it flew into the back of the net.
Another red card, this time just before half time, saw Blues facing ten men opponents for the second half. Xavier Simons seemed to panic as Laird cruised past him and flew in rather recklessly, you would expect Wycombe to have held on, shut up shop and try to mitigate any further damage considering how Blues had played throughout most of the first half but instead the player down seemed to embolden Wycombe.
The second half, Blues seemed content simply to keep the ball and there was a lot of passing around the back (Which does admittedly frustrate me at times, but it’s a great tactic lets be honest) but the lack of pressure seemed to grow Wycombe’s confidence. The last 15 minutes became a bit nervy, at least I felt it was sitting watching Wycombe press forward and get a corner or two.
One of these corners lead to Allsop coming off injured and being replaced by Peacock-Farrell. He saw out the game without any errors but hopefully we see a return of Allsop on Tuesday but he landed on his ankle quite funnily and we’re certainly in a position to not need to rush players back. I don’t want to see injuries being the “monumental f*** up” that costs us, especially as Laird also found himself withdrawn injured.
All in all a game of two halves but Blues were just the better team. It’s hard to see now where, if anywhere, Blues will drop points but I do think injuries may well play their part in allowing for a surprise result before the seasons ends and you know what, for a change I don’t think that would be the end of the world.
